Force distribution within a barchan dune

چکیده

Barchan dunes, or simply barchans, are crescent-shaped dunes found in diverse environments such as the bottom of rivers, Earth's deserts and surface Mars. In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 101, 012905 (2020)], we investigated evolution subaqueous barchans by using computational fluid dynamics - discrete element method (CFD-DEM), our simulations captured well an initial pile toward barchan dune both bedform grain scales. The numerical having shown to be adequate, obtain now forces acting on each grain, isolate contact interactions, investigate how distributed transmitted dune. We present force maps probability density functions (PDFs) for values streamwise spanwise directions, show that stronger experienced grains at neither crest nor leading edge barchan, but positions just upstream centroid periphery also great part undergo longitudinal order 10$^{-7}$ N, with negative around crest, resulting decelerations deposition region. These data distribution tends route horns being fundamental comprehend their morphodynamics. However, best authors' knowledge, they not accessible from current experiments, making results important step understanding behavior dunes.

Barchan dune asymmetry: Numerical investigation

Barchan dunes — crescent-shaped dunes that form in areas of unidirectional winds and low sand availability — commonly display an asymmetric shape, with one limb extended downwind. Several factors have been identified as potential causes for barchan dune asymmetry on Earth and Mars: asymmetric bimodal wind regime, topography, influx asymmetry and dune collision. However, the dynamics and potenti...

Size distribution and structure of Barchan dune fields

Barchans are isolated mobile dunes often organized in large dune fields. Dune fields seem to present a characteristic dune size and spacing, which suggests a cooperative behavior based on dune interaction. In Duran et al. (2009), we propose that the redistribution of sand by collisions between dunes is a key element for the stability and size selection of barchan dune fields. This approach was ...

Minimal size of a barchan dune.

Barchans are dunes of high mobility which have a crescent shape and propagate under conditions of unidirectional wind. However, sand dunes only appear above a critical size, which scales with the saturation distance of the sand flux [P. Hersen, S. Douady, and B. Andreotti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 264301 (2002); B. The dune size distribution and scaling relations of barchan dune fields

Barchan dunes emerge as a collective phenomena involving the generation of thousands of them in so called barchan dune fields. By measuring the size and position of dunes in Moroccan barchan dune fields, we find that these dunes tend to distribute uniformly in space and follow an unique size distribution function. We introduce an analytical mean-field approach to show that this empirical size d...

On the crescentic shape of barchan dune

Aeolian desert sand dunes birth from wind flow and sand bed interactions: depending on wind properties and sand availability, they can adopt several different shapes from huge motionless star dunes to small and fast mobile barchan dunes. These latter have a characteristic crescentic shape and form on hard ground with low sand supply under a monodirectional wind . Here, a 3d barchan model based ...
